EQUAL VOICES is our free community concerts series that celebrates the diverse contributions of different voices and cultures.
This spring, our program features two renowned opera singers, mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz and tenor Tony Baek, accompanied by San Diego Opera Conductor-in-Residence Bruce Stasyna, who will present some of the most beautiful and popular opera arias and beloved Latin-American songs.
All concerts are FREE. The concert program is the same in each venue.

Mezzo-soprano
Mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz made her Company debut as Mercedes in Carmen in 2019, created the role of Frida Kahlo in the world premiere of El ultimó sueño de Frida y Diego in 2022, appeared as La Maestra Dele Novizie in Suor Angelica, and was last heard this season as La Mujer in El Milagro del Recuerdo (The Miracle of Remembering). Notable appearances include Melibea in Il Viaggio a Reims and Hansel in Hansel and Gretel with Bellas Artes National Opera, Rosina in The Barber of Seville and Angelina in Cinderella with Teatro del Bicentenario and Bellas Artes National Opera, Isolier in Le Comte Ory with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco, and Maddalena in Il Viaggio a Reims at the Rossini Opera Festival. Her concert repertory includes Glagolitic Mass at the International Cervantino Festival, Ode to Common Things with La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, Tres Canciones para Orquestra y Mezzosoprano at International Festival Instrumenta, and Seven Deadly Sins at the Aspen Music Festival.

Tenor Dongwhi Baek, who recently appeared as Gheraldo in Gianni Schicchi with San Diego Opera, has extensive experience in major opera roles and oratorios including La bohème and Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), La Traviata (Verdi), Cinderella (Rossini), and The Rake’s Progress (Stravinsky), and the tenor soloist in the Messiah (Handel), Bach cantatas, and Bach’s Mass in B minor. He has sung with San Diego Opera, Boston Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, and performs at a number of music venues including the Del Mar International Composers Symposium, Opera San Luis Obispo, Pacific Chorale, Long Beach Camerata Singers, and Los Angeles Chamber Choir.
Bruce Stasyna

Canadian-born Bruce Stasyna is currently the Chorus Master and Music Administrator for San Diego Opera, Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor for Washington Concert Opera, and Music Director of Vero Beach Opera. He has been on the conducting rosters of the New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, and Sugar Creek Opera, and has held positions as Chorus Master for New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, Wolf Trap Opera and Des Moines Opera. He has collaborated on many notable North American premieres including Anna Nicole, The Handmaid’s Tale, Orazi e Curiazi, and Joseph Merrick dit Elephant Man. As a pianist he has concertized with such artists as Marcello Giordani, Deborah Voigt, J’nai Bridges, Irene Roberts, Marina Costa-Jackson, and Richard Troxell.
